President Trump's asylum ban is blocked by the Supreme Court

On December 21, 2018, the United States Supreme Court blocked the Trump Administration’s crackdown of immigrants by voting 5-4 to leave a lower court ruling in place.

Chief Justice John Roberts – appointed by President George W. Bush – voted with the more liberal justices of the Court holding that President Trump's unlawful ban on asylum for migrants who attempted to cross the southern border of the United States will not be enforced.

Newly appointed Justice Brett Kavanaugh – along with the Justices Clarence Thomas, Neil Gorsuch, and Samuel Alito – sided with the Trump administration. Neither side issued opinions explaining their votes.
